When asbestos is intact and undisturbed, it presents minimal risk. But the moment it's drilled, broken, sanded or removed without controls, microscopic fibres become airborne. Inhaled, they can lodge in lung tissue and cause mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer or asbestosis — diseases with latency periods of 20–40 years and no reliable cure.
Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, the duty to manage asbestos sits squarely with the property owner or duty-holder. DIY removal of any quantity beyond trace residue is, in most cases, illegal — and certainly inadvisable.
